TUNE was established in 1973 as part of the State of Iowa Community Betterment Program. The goal was to coordinate the ideas, actions, and talents of the many people belonging to Northwood's various service organizations and groups. "Tree Planting Day" was TUNE's first community wide project--planting 300 shade trees. Other early projects included the formation of "Meals on Wheels", the riverbank clean-up, development of the mini-park, and fundraising for the swimming pool, 4th of July fireworks, and the first volunteer fire department rescue unit. TUNE disbanded in the mid 1980's but continued the fireworks fundraising annually.
In 2003, TUNE was reorganized. The newly elected board members succeeded in achieving a 501(c)3 (non-profit) status. The mission of TUNE continues to be the community betterment of Northwood. Our focus is three-fold--development and revitalization of downtown, promotion of Northwood, and ongoing fundraising to accomplish these goals. |
